My Story

Hi!   My name is Hope. I’m named Hope because when I was found dumped outside of a business in Dayton, Ohio. I was in terrible health and my rescuers thought the name suited me well. I had fleas and a terrible skin infection which resulted in half of my body being hairless.  I was super skinny and it was obvious that I spent most of my life (the doctor thinks I’m between 7–9 years old) up to that point being bred just so my so-called “owner” could make money off of my puppies. Truthfully, I didn’t have much Hope but my rescue angels from Schnauzer Rescue Cincinnati told me it was going to be okay.  And you know what? I believed them.   Fast forward nearly two months later and here I am! After being bathed with medicated shampoo every 3–4 days upon my arrival to SRC, I am FINALLY free of those pesky fleas, I’m starting to grow my hair back and I smell much better! My doctor says I still have a ways to go with the hair growth and there may be spots on my back that never fill in but overall it’s a big difference between then and now! It’s amazing what medication and a strict diet will do! I am fed a lamb based diet and I love the fish oil that my foster mom (I call her my chef) puts on my dinner each night. What a delicacy! I’m told it’s to help with my skin and hair growth too so look at that – win win! I scarf my food up in no time and it’s one of my favorite moments of the day. Oh, and as for the hair growth? I’m looking at my recovery as a positive because it just means I get to have a cute wardrobe to keep me warm this winter while my hair grows back in.  Fashionable sweaters here I come!   My hair was not the only thing lacking when I arrived. My rescue angles immediately noticed that my front teeth were ground down likely due to cage chewing. I couldn’t help it! Living in a wired cage and likely used for breeding most of my life made me want to escape so badly.  The good news is now that I’m in a safe environment I don’t mind the crate at all. My foster mom throws a treat in there and I walk right in and settle down. It’s quite comfy with my big cushion and blankets that I snuggle into! I sleep through the night and don’t make one peep. After all, a girl has to get her beauty rest!   In the morning I spring up and wag my big tail that my foster mom has affectionately called my “tick tock” because I know that’s when I get to go on my walk. I prefer pottying out front on my leash rather than walking around in my fenced in back yard on my own. Girls have to go to the restroom together so they can get their gossip in, you know?  Because I like my leash so much, I don’t have to go to a home with a fenced in yard. My perfect forever home should be willing to walk me ideally twice a day and let me out every so often to do my business.  I’m pretty quick about it unlike my foster brothers who just “dilly dally” around. That’s what my mom says anyway. She says I’m super easy. She was also shocked to find out that I’m fully housebroken. She’s not sure how and told me once that I’m too good to be true. I’m not sure what that meant but I’ll take it!   Speaking of foster brothers, I have two. I live with one standard schnauzer who is 40 lbs. and a mini schnoodle who is 20 lbs. We get along well. Now that I’m feeling better I’d like to be more active and play! My fur brothers think they’re too regal…or maybe it’s just cause they’re old but regardless playing isn’t their thing. If my forever home had a moderately active pup who liked to play from time to time, I think that could be fun! I don’t prefer dominant personalities though so I would need to be introduced properly to ensure my fur sibling(s) and I get along. If I had to be the only pup in my future household that would be okay too. My main requirement is to have someone who is okay with my strong desire to cuddle on the couch. I MUST be in my person’s lap at all times and I will often lick my person if they stop petting me. After so many years of neglect I have some making up to do!   Recently I was spayed and I had a mammary mass removed. The doctor found out the mass was cancerous BUT the lymph nodes around the mass that were also removed were not. I went back in for a follow-up xray of my chest to see if the cancer had spread and guess what?! It didn’t, which means I’m cancer free! I’m so glad I found SRC who could take care of me before it started to spread! The doctor says there is no additional required follow-up on my health at this time which means... I now get to start looking for my forever home! Could you be it?   Hope is being fostered in Cincinnati. She is up-to-date on vaccines and recently had a dental in addition to her spay.
